Feasibility study: offshore energy systems

2018-19

Everoze was delighted to lead this feasibility study on behalf of Crown Estate Scotland. It examined how integration of offshore renewables into a localised energy system can support the pathway to commercial viability of offshore renewable projects, whilst benefiting coastal communities through improved local energy solutions. This is a big question to answer – one which has to account for the needs of both coastal communities and offshore renewables developers. Following a programme of stakeholder engagement, we found that there are a wide range of challenges and opportunities to be addressed, from reducing energy costs in small scale off-grid systems to managing offtake from large-scale offshore wind farms in increasingly grid constrained areas.

By looking at specific scenarios that could arise in Scotland, the team were able to consider solutions for the challenges these presented. Whilst many of these solutions are not yet commercially viable, it has been possible to identify recommendations to address relevant barriers and to outline the significant potential benefits of such solutions to a range of local and industry stakeholders.
